DV for Teachers

How to Link!

August 27, 2009 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Tim served as a judge at the Georgia Student Media Festival in May, and posted about it on his blog DV for Teachers. Tim found the event rewarding, and wants more schools to compete because it gets students more involved in learning while they think they’re making cool stuff. Actually, everyone is getting what they want even if they don’t know it. FTW!!

Free Photos!

March 18, 2009 · No Comments · photos, Workshops

Today I’m showing some ECE students how to find and use free photos on their edublogs. Here’s a nice airplane from János at flickr.com to illustrate! Airplane image courtesy of János at flickr.com.

Before I do that, I want to make sure everyone knows how to find images that are licensed for reuse. The Creative Commons license allows that, as long as you provide attribution – i.e., you have to give credit to the photographer. This video from the Creative Commons site makes it easy to learn how to search for CC-licensed images using the Firefox browser.

Watched the video? Know how to make sure your images are licensed for putting in your blog? Let’s go:

Among my favorite sources for this is flickr, with tons of images under the CC license from professional and amateur photographers around the world.

I’ve posted more stock image sources here and here and here at DV for Teachers. Have fun!

Here’s another airplane picture: Thanks to the photographer for this image!

Pages Vs. Posts

February 4, 2009 · No Comments · Blogging

Need a good explanation of the difference? Edublogger Sue Waters has a good one.

I’ve put up some Pages you can see a the top of the page: Assignments and Syllabus. You can use Pages for that purpose, or an About This Class, or About Me, or more. You can also protect certain pages (or posts) with a password so you can choose who sees it.

Tim posts about Tim’s Post

August 27, 2008 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Tim Merritt (that’s me!) said this on his blog:

When I come across a rich trove of blog-worthy items, I don’t always want to post them all at once. The problem is they often get lost in my “Blog This” folder in my browser bookmarks. With the best will in the world, I don’t always go back and find those links as I should, nor do I remember to go into my WordPress Drafts page to update and publish. (I have 245 unpublished drafts right now!!)

A Blog Is Useful

Dr. Olga Jarrett is thinking about a good way to get news about her organization, the American Association for the Child’s Right to Play. This is an important right that is under assault from many quarters; even though I think children need to know about technology and everything else, they need to run around and run into each other. They need to burn off their energy in play, because it’s an important vector for learning.
